Become a Volunteer

The Mission relies on volunteers!

There are many ways to help The Sandy Springs Mission.  From serving in the classroom to baking a cake, our volunteers impact the lives of the children in many ways.   Working with our amazing volunteers, the kids truly find new confidence in themselves as they see their grades progressively improve. Our volunteers inspire a ‘yes-I-can’ attitude in the kids and give them the necessary tools to succeed, instilling an amazing sense of hope for our student’s futures.

Virtual Reading Buddy
Wish you could volunteer but have a hard time getting away from the office?  Try out our Virtual Reading Buddy program.  We provide the books and discussion questions then arrange a ‘reading date’ with your assigned buddy.  Using Facetime and/or Skype, we’ll link you to the student who’ll be at our facility.  Together, you’ll read and discuss books each week.  Our Virtual Reading Buddy coordinator will track your student’s progress.  At the end of each grading period, buddies are invited to the Mission to celebrate with their student in person.

Taking travel time out of the equation makes volunteering a snap!  Virtual reading buddies are asked to commit ½ hour per week between 3-5pm.  Grading period celebrations will take place approximately every 6 weeks and will also be held between 3-5pm and last 30 minutes.  To sign up as a volunteer, please click here to start the process.

Summer Camp - Teachers, Counselors and Junior Counselors
Our 3-week summer camp program is an action-packed combination of academic skill review blended with good ol’ summer camp activities.  Children are divided into groups by grade level and led by a teacher, a counselor and a junior counselor – all counselors being volunteers from the community.

In the mornings, volunteers work with small groups of students on reading comprehension, language skills, writing and improving math competencies.  In the afternoons, the children enjoy fun and games: a combination of arts and crafts, field trips and team activities.

Camp is held at:
Mt. Vernon Baptist Church
850 Mount Vernon Parkway NW, Sandy Springs, GA 30327

Teachers
Experienced teachers are needed M, W & TH 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon and we ask that teachers commit to at least one full week.

Counselors
We welcome high school students in grades 10-12 (that is raising grade level), college students, and adult volunteers to serve as counselors during summer camp.  Counselors are assigned to a specific grade level for the duration of the camp in order to establish strong mentor relationships with their students.  The counselor will support the teacher in morning academic classes as well as guide students through their afternoon activity schedule.  During the selection process, preference is given to past counselors and junior counselors.
Counselors attend M-F, 8:30-3:00. To sign up as a volunteer, please click here to start the process.

Junior Counselor
Junior counselor positions are available to students in grades 8-9 (that is raising grade level).  Junior counselors are ‘in-training’ for future counselor positions.  The junior counselor will support the teachers and counselors throughout the day’s activities.

Middle Years Program Mentor
Each year Riverwood requests mentors to support 10th grade students with the Middle Years Program (MYP) project a graduation requirement for all students attending an International Baccalaureate program school.  Mentors meet monthly with students during their lunch break at Riverwood High School.  Mentors serve as ‘sounding boards’ for ideas, editors for content and cheerleaders to keep students motivated.  The time commitment is approximately 1 hour a month from September – April.  To sign up as a volunteer, please click here to start the process.

Personal Mentors
Mission Mentors are called to action when Executive Director, Felix Lora, feels that a teen is in need of the support that only a mentor can give. Mentors are interviewed and trained by Felix. If you feel called to mentor a teen, please send an email to ssmvolunteer@gmail.com expressing your interest.

Snack Volunteers
Snack Bags Needed: 140 kids – Providing snacks is a great way to help The Mission. This can be done individually or with a group. We welcome donated snack bags that can be assembled at The Mission or at your own location. When donations are not provided, the Mission purchases food and always needs help with shopping, preparation and serving. If you or your group would like to volunteer to help feed our kids, email ssmvolunteer@gmail.com. Instruction and guidance will be provided once your date is established.
